New interfaces for reading, now possible with AI
Zoom-in-summaries, OpenAI DevDay, Building GPTs, and my Book at Printed Matter
This newsletter covers what I’m building and learning in creative AI, as I move towards what I’ll work on next. If you have opportunities that align with what I’m looking for, please get in touch or book a call 🙌.
Today I’ll talk about:
My new AI/UI prototype to zoom in on articles: See the demo, and play with it.
I attended OpenAI DevDay and have been making daily GPTs with GPT Builder. See a range of what you can make, and how to customize GPT actions.
More fun: My book “Feeling Great About My Butt” is at Printed Matter in NY.
New AI Prototype! Zoom in and out of an article
Have you ever wanted to have a quick idea of an article before reading it? What would it be like to zoom in and out of an article, the way you would a map? I made an app that lets you zoom out on an article to get a quick overview, or zoom in and get more details.
You can play with the prototype, and check out the video demo.
I used Claude to summarize the article at different lengths, and GPT-4 to get started on the app. By moving the slider, you pull in a summary at a given length.
This prototype came from the inquiry: What new interfaces can we have to interact with generative AI? You can imagine a pinch to zoom interface in this context. What other interfaces come to mind? I feel like we’re so early in the space of UI and AI. As these AI models become more powerful, how might we create interfaces for them that are more welcoming, intuitive, and expressive?
LFBuild 🚀🚀🚀 Custom GPTs with #dailyGPTs
Last week I went to OpenAI DevDay, you can check out my video recap here.
There was an exciting energy throughout the event, and lots of folks to meet. The talks are all available online now on OpenAI’s youtube channel. One of my favorites was the Research x Product talk, going deeper on the timeline and insights from launching products like ChatGPT.
GPT Builder and the Assistants API were announced at DevDay. Over the past week I’ve started #dailyGPTs to make a new GPT each day and explore what’s possible. Here’s the start of the thread, and you can follow the hashtag for all of the GPTs.
I’ve mades ones across productivity, wellness, and creativity. See a recap here of the first week making custom GPTs.
Event flyer to calendar: Take a photo of an event flyer and automatically have it added to your calendar. I’m most proud of this one because it includes a custom action, specifically for the integration with my Google Calendar. I’m interested in how we can build useful applications with AI, and these actions are valuable. Here’s a quick guide on how I made it with the custom GPT instructions and Zapier integration.
Cat Feeder Manual: I made a GPT and uploaded the cat feeder manual so I wouldn’t have to read it. I just asked directly what I needed to know.
Luminous World: I love this one a lot. It creates beautiful bright and mystical imagery. It reminds me of a specific style of illustrations I saw in a children’s book when I was 4. I’m so happy to be able to see more like them.
Cartoon Time: Take a photo, make a cartoon of it!
Nisargadatta Sage: A GPT where I uploaded the book I Am That, which contains dialogues with one of my favorite spiritual thinkers, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. I find his approach to meditation and awareness inspiring. I could ask the GPT questions about meditation and anxiety, and get responses that point to his insights.
Follow along here as I make more. If you’ve made some too, I’d love to check them out!
My book is at Printed Matter in NY 🤩
You can now find my book “Feeling Great About My Butt” at Printed Matter in NY. This is a fantastic bookstore of zines, art books, and independent publications. If you’re in NY, I highly recommend visiting.
I’ve just started shipping my book out wholesale, if you run a bookstore and are interested in carrying it, please get in touch!
If you’d like to see a preview or order it online, head to my online shop.
Thanks for reading!
📚 Check out my AI Resources list. I made this list for myself to stay up to date on AI things and organize resources I find helpful.
📞 Book an unoffice hours conversation: We could talk about something you’re working on, jam on possibilities for collaboration, share past experiences and stories, draw together / make a zine, or meditate.
🙌 Follow what I’m up to by subscribing here and see my AI projects here. If you know anyone that would find this post interesting, I’d really appreciate it if you forward it to them! And if you’d like to jam more on any of this, I’d love to chat here or on twitter.
